Some of Yala's creatures

Leopard

A recent study showed that Yala has one of the densest leopard populations in the world. These top predators have ample choice of food in the park-- spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, and monkeys. The sight of a leopard in the wild is something one does not ever forget!

Sloth Bear

In its native habitat in Sri Lanka, this bear is called Walaha Sinhalese. The front feet have 4 inch long claws that are used for digging, climbing, and self defense. Sloth bears can jump 10 feet, and also can hang upside down like a sloth! My advice to you-- don't get into a fight with a sloth bear, you certainly will lose. These incredible animals are native to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Elephant

The Sri Lankan elephant is a subspecies of the Asian elephant. These elephants eat grasses, leaves, bark, fallen fruits (such as wood apple) and palm leaves (like coconut leaf). They follow migration patterns based on the wet and dry season. These beautiful creatures are endangered.

Peacock

The peacock is native to Sri Lanka, and best known for it's extravagant tail feathers. They eat seeds, insects, fruit, small reptiles, and small mammals. They can be seen all over Yala.
